THE SWING – Sri Lanka
Directed by Yasiru Sandaruwan Weerasinghe
The Swing is a physical mono drama that explores the lived experiences of women within a society shaped by tradition, gender expectations, and inherited silence. Emerging from a suspended woven sac, a woman begins a symbolic journey through childhood, womanhood, and myth. As she transforms between a young girl, an ordinary woman, and the revered Goddess Pa ththini, the performance reveals the contradictions imposed upon female identity. Using minimal dialogue and powerful physical expression, the play examines how social norms are transmitted across generations, teaching women to endure restriction, judgment, violence, and sacrifice. The swing becomes a recurring symbol of freedom, innocence, control, and confinement. Through movement, ritual imagery, and dark humor, the performer confronts the expectations placed upon women while questioning the boundaries between purity, divinity, and humanity.

Blending contemporary physical theatre with cultural symbolism, The Swing offers a poetic and unsettling reflection on resilience, oppression, and the struggle for selfhood.
