KATHA MINAKSHI – India
Directed by Deep Bhowmik

Katha Meenakshi reinterprets the Ramayana from the perspective of Shurpanakha, transforming her from a feared demoness into a deeply wounded and reflective woman. Set against the ruins of Lanka, the play unfolds as her monologue of memory, pain, and moral questioning. She recalls the splendor of Rakshasa civilization and its destruction through Aryan expansion led by Rama.

Shurpanakha narrates how her love for Rama in the forest was met not with compassion but with humiliation—Lakshmana mutilated her nose and ears while Rama remained silent. This personal violation becomes the emotional root of Sita’s abduction and the devastating war that follows. Ravana is portrayed as a tragic, cultured ruler rather than a mere villain. In the end, Shurpanakha meets the exiled Sita in Valmiki’s ashram and realizes that a woman’s true power lies in dignity, not revenge. The play closes with Shurpanakha in lonely, eternal waiting.
