VOICE OF DILAKSHA – Sri Lanka – 25th August

The setting is a claustrophobic, dimly lit bunker, sheltering nearly 100 people men, women, the elderly, and children as they face the final, inevitable moments of a long-standing, brutal war. Outside, the world is ending; inside, the air is thick with the scent of open wounds, grief, and the collective trauma of those who have lost spouses and children to the shelling. Amidst this scene of apocalyptic despair, a woman is seized by an intense, overwhelming urge to defecate. As the world outside prepares to collapse, her internal struggle becomes a desperate battle for control. The play focuses entirely on her excruciating physical discomfort and her frantic, silent attempts to suppress this basic biological necessity in a space where privacy is nonexistent and death is imminent.

The drama unfolds through the reactions of those around her. Some view her struggle with cold indifference, others with disgust, and some with strange, existential empathy. The tension centers on the clash between her desperate need to maintain a shred of dignity and the raw, animalistic reality of her body in the face of inevitable destruction. The story hinges on a single, agonizing question: Does she manage to hold it, or does she break?
